What is ASTM A572 steel plate

ASTM A572 plate is a high strength low alloy columbium vanadium structural steel, it’s strength is higher than the common plates ASTM A36, mainly used for the the transmission line steel tower, communication steel tower, road light pole, and other product. It has advantages of high strength, high toughness, and good welding ability.

How many grades covered in A572

In ASTM A572 specification it covers five grades plates, which are Grade 42, Grade 50, and Grade 55, 60, 65. These grades also could be applied for manufacturing high strength low alloy structural steel profiles, coils, plates, sheet piling, and beam, etc. As below listed:

Grades 42 [290], 50 [345], and 55 [380] can be made to bolts, rivet, welded structural steel profiles.
Grades 60 [415] and 65 [450] are to applied for bridge building in riveted or bolted type, and constructions, buildings that required high strength.
Compared to Chinese standards Q345 B, Q420 B,Q460 C plates, ASTM A572 series have low carbon and silicon, high strength, high toughness characteristics.

ASTM A572 Grade 50 is the most used material in this standard. It has higher yield and tensile strength than A36, also has lower weight. Better ductility and easy to form, therefor, it can be easily welded and processing through the appropriate techniques.
